I first started listening to Līve sometime in high school around 1993 or 1994. I had heard Selling the Drama on the radio and I loved it. I was in one of those CD programs where they mailed you new CDs every month from a catalog and selected one of their CDs called Mental Jewelry. Little did I know at the time that it was the wrong album! But I listened to it anyways and it was AMAZING. Finally ordered Throwing Copper and was EVEN BETTER. I listened to both of those albums all. the. time.
Then I saw them at the Orpheum in Boston on 11/22/1994 and I was totally hooked. Absolutely incredible show. A little known band called Weezer opened for them and they were great too.

I then saw them at Brandeis on 04/29/1995 and it was open floor so I got to get REALLY close to the stage. Ed came out into the back of the theatre to sing one song and I think stage dived. I may be misremembering the stage dive but it was a WILD show. Absolutely awesome. The energy was incredible.

The next time I saw them was 2/16/1997 at UNH - TWO DAYS before Secret Samadhi was released. It was also an awesome show - I was in the front and they played a ton of songs from the album that I had never heard before. 2 days later I arrived early at the record store and I distinctly remember listening to it for the first time as I walked to class in college on my Sony Discman. Another great album.

Somewhere around this time I started a Līve fansite on Geocities (RIP). If I recall correctly it was called "Heropsychodreamers" after their song from Secret Samadhi. I shared bootlegs and rare horrible quality videos of them playing using RealPlayer. I've tried searching for it on the Geocities archive but have been unsuccessful.
I then saw them at the Orpheum again in Boston on 2/23/1997 and met Chad T and Ed afterwards. I just hung around the theater after the show until they came out. I think I have a picture of it somewhere - I'll need to look for them. I remember my girlfriend at the time embarrassing me telling them I was their biggest fan.
Well she wasn't wrong! Ha. I also asked them about Susquehanna and I think Cheetah (two unreleased songs at the time) and asked if they were going to release them. I can't remember their answer but they seemed impressed that I knew about them. It was a very brief meeting. I remember reading that they were at the Rattlesnake bar in Boston the night before and I was mad at myself that I didn't think about that and try to see them there. (Rattlesnake is a track from Secret Samadhi as you know)

Life went on and college went on. (I was in film school in Boston) I saw them two more times. I also learned to play guitar and could play along to the entire Throwing Copper album which was loads of fun.

I studied abroad in France in 1998 and continued to play around with my Geocities fansite. Eventually I started making filmmaking websites as a hobby and my interest in keeping up and maintaining the Līve fansite waned.
I moved out to Los Angeles in 2001 and started working in film and TV as an assistant editor and an editor. For a while I worked at a post production house that did a ton of music videos - I met a lot of great artists but sadly we never did a Līve video. Their fourth album The Distance to Here was pretty good but the others since weren't as good in my opinion so I began to listen to them less and less - especially after having my first kid in 2008.
Eventually I heard that they broke up which made me sad. But I did watch Ed perform at a club in Los Angeles solo and that was great. (can't remember when and sadly didn't save stub).
Fast forward to June 2023 I heard an advertisement on KROQ for a concert for them at Yaamava on 06/22/2023 which is around a 2 hour drive from Los Angeles. My kids are older now so I decided to buy tickets to go to it with my wife. Sadly my kids couldn't come as it's 21 years and up in the casino. It was a pretty great show and it was awesome to hear Ed sing again. Sadly it was just Ed as I've learned that there's been issues with the bandmembers - Rolling Stones article discussion for another thread - but it still rocked. It was a little short compared to what I remember and they didn't do any of the cool improvisations that I remember but I still very much enjoyed. We were sitting right behind the mixer so we could see the set list. Someone behind us kept on shouting SHIT TOWNE! and I thought it was funny because I could see how many more songs there were before it.

They also played a version of Mother Earth is a Vicious Crowd which I thought was wonderful.
After the concert, I searched online for the current status of Līve fansites and I only found two Facebook groups (I was already a member of the Friends of Live one) and a forum that seemed really nice but unfortunately is using forum software from 2005 which made it unusable for me on mobile. I'm not a huge fan of Facebook groups (hard to find and follow conversations) and since I've been doing websites as a hobby/side gig for the past 20 years I decided to go full circle and make a new Līve fan site for fun... 25 years since I started my Geocities one.
I hope you enjoy this new site. We're going to have their full music catalog that you can rate and review and many other cool features. The name was inspired obviously from Mother Earth is a Vicious Crowd which has the perfect lyrics for a fansite community.
Pollution, cain and misery
Oceans of golden mystery
Armies boisterous and armies loud
Portraits of a vicious crowd
Talk to me, talk to me now
Hey man, you're all that I have
Hey man, you're all that I have
Me, myself, myself and I
Were born to work and born to die
I have chosen my anthems, of these I am proud
Portraits of a divided crowd
Talk to me, talk to me now
Hey man, you're all that I have
Hey man, you're all that I have
Hey man and we're all that we have
Talk to me, talk to me now
Talk to me, talk to me now
Talk to me, talk to me now
Leave it behind
Can't you leave it behind now?
Can't you leave it behind?
Leave it all behind, leave it all behind
Leave it all behind, leave it all behind
Talk to me, talk to me now
Talk to me, talk to me now
Talk to me, talk to me now
Talk to me now
Talk to me now
Oh, vicious crowd
Talk to me now
Oh vicious, vicious crowd
Vicious crowd, vicious crowd
Talk to me now
Oh, vicious crowd
Talk to me, talk to me now
Talk to me now
I look forward to meeting all my fellow Līve fans!
